From a noble hunting family known for taking down rogue magical beings, Blaire Walman has risen from being a noblewoman and into a high rank knight. She is the right hand man of the Empress of Atharia.

Due to her parents’ involvement in the Corvina Massacre, she becomes the target of Carmilla’s ire. Her kidnapping is the catalyst for all the events of Book One and the entire series.

She is one of the POV characters in Madwomen.

Appearance

Blaire is a woman of lean build. She has unkempt short butter blond hair framing her face and green eyes. As a knight, she is usually wearing the standard knight’s uniform: a gambeson under silver armor. On her hip rests a scabbard for her sword Cyra.

As a noblewoman, she wears green gowns and her hair is neatly slicked back.

She wears multiple accessories, most of which are family heirlooms. She wears a chain link bracelet and two rings on each hand. On formal occasions, she wears a necklace with an emerald. All of them are made of silver to keep vampires away.

Personality

Blaire has always been seen as a kind young mistress of the Walman family. People close to her remark that she can be cheeky and extremely talkative at times, most especially towards Sylleth and Aisha.

She listens well to others and loves to take care of the people around her— she thrives in being needed and being seen as someone more than just nobility. She sees vigilantism as a way to help others and initially wanted to engage in it before applying as a knight. She greatly enjoys being around children, elderly, and the sick, wanting to be of service to them. When unfortunate things happen, Blaire is always present. She is always there at the scene, helping those who were affected— either bringing them to medical professionals or handing out funds or cutting down human or monster perpetrators. Many common people joke that Blaire perhaps masterminds these disasters in order to be put into relevance but it does not go past jokes; Blaire is well-loved by the common people. In turn, she loves and protects them.

As a noblewoman, she acts mature and tries her very best to understand everyone. She is described to have a girlish charm and appeals to everyone with her ringing words. What others do not know, however, is that Blaire is aware of this reputation of hers and uses it to her advantage to get out of sticky situations she somehow gets herself into nearly daily. This causes her to skip thinking over her decisions and jump into action as she knows it is possible for her to get out of trouble easily should she appeal through her words and her name.

Despite pushing the idea that she dislikes being reduced to a noblewoman, she likes to use her name to her advantage, picking and choosing times she presents herself as a Walman. She refuses to acknowledge the privilege it offers her and desires to be seen as a completely separate entity from her name and status despite actively using it and benefiting from it. Lilith describes this aspect of Blaire to be ‘painfully blind’ to the fortune she receives instead of using it for the good of everyone else. Carmilla thinks Blaire is stuck up and is a hypocrite in this regard as Blaire pushes the idea that she suffers so much from being reduced to her noble status when she herself uses it to alleviate her daily troubles. Blaire simply thinks she is making use of resources she already has.

As a girl with a cheery attitude, she finds it difficult to cooperate with those who don’t share her enthusiastic mindset. She especially finds it hard to get along with Lilith and, at times, Aisha.

History

Background

Blaire is the only child to the political match between Rowena and Nathaniel Walman. As a girl, she was known for being timid. Despite her high parentage, Blaire acted nothing like the sociable little ladies in court— so much so that the moment the girl’s attitude became a joke within the circles of ladies, Rowena made sure to berate Blaire into propriety.

Since then, society saw Blaire as a bright little girl with a childish charm. She’d be unafraid to pull on the sleeves of young masters and ask them many questions about their interests. She’d lend an ear to the ramblings of lords and ladies all while nodding and smiling sweetly. She quickly undid the knots in the hearts of those in court with her charms and honeyed words. Those that have spoken to Blaire remark her to be an excellent conversationalist at merely ten.

Blaire befriends the young princess Aisha by acting dumb and inquiring about the fish floating in the palace pond. Aisha, claiming Blaire to be completely and utterly ‘hopeless,’ takes the noblegirl as her vassal.
